Third Doses for Immunocompromised Individuals

Studies have found that some immunocompromised people do not build the same level of immunity/protection against COVID-19 after they receive their vaccination the way non-immunocompromised people do and therefore, the CDC is recommending that moderately to severely immunocompromised people receive an additional dose.

Please note that third doses are not the same as booster shots, and the third dose should be the same type of vaccine as the first two whenever possible. Currently, additional doses are not authorized for immunocompromised people who received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

Third doses are available 28 days after the second dose of Moderna or Pfizer for anyone who has:

  • Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
  • Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
  • Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
  • Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
  • Advanced or untreated HIV infection
  • Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response

COVID-19 Vaccination for Pregnant People

The CDC is encouraging all pregnant people or people who are thinking about becoming pregnant and those breastfeeding to get vaccinated to protect themselves from COVID-19. The CDC issued an urgent health advisory on September 29, 2021 that strongly recommends COVID-19 vaccination either before or during pregnancy because the benefits of vaccination outweigh known or potential risks.
